Visiting the Ozarks and Northern Arkansas
Throughout the Ozarks, temperatures are falling but spirits remain high. Winter weather doesn’t get too cold for outdoor fun in the area’s beautiful lakes and national parks, and a wealth of special events, festivals, holiday celebrations, and more await this season’s visitors.
Peak fall foliage may have come and gone, but a cruise along the Arkansas Scenic 7 Byway is still a rewarding venture. Not only is the ride itself beautiful, but stops along the way, like Russellville’s Lake Dardanelle State Park and Hot Springs National Park, near Van Buren, are also truly unforgettable.
The community of Searcy signals the official start of the holiday season on December 5th, inviting visitors to experience Christmas the way it was in 1880. White County Pioneer Village is a collection of 19th-century buildings, farm equipment and other preserved relics, and the 2015 Old Fashioned Christmas in the Village fills the tiny town with decorations, music, carolers, refreshments, live animals, and more.
Bentonville visitors can get into the spirit of the holiday season by joining residents in lining the streets on December 12th, when the 2015 Bentonville Christmas Parade makes its way through the downtown area. Get down there early to secure the best spot to see a lineup of festive floats, marching bands, and dancers – things get moving at 11 a.m.
Fayetteville residents and visitors ring in the New Year at Fayetteville Downtown Square on December 31st. Last Night Fayetteville 2015 is a performing arts festival with performances in eight area venues, culminating in the Hog Drop Countdown and a fireworks display at midnight. The full evening of fun gets started around sundown.
The people of Eureka Springs look to help keep your creative juices flowing, and the weekly Writers’ Night Out at the Writers Colony is open to anyone with an interest in the art, inviting aspiring writers to discuss their goals and dreams while enjoying a home-cooked dinner every Thursday night. Then, on January 21st, the POET-luck at the Writers Colony is a potluck dinner and literary salon combining conviviality, craft, and critique.
