Arkansas State University

The northern Arkansas city of Jonesboro is home to Arkansas State University. The university was founded in 1909 and established as First District Agricultural School. Herman Davis State Park

A one-acre state park, the Herman Davis State Park is located in northern Arkansas in the city of Manila – just an hour north of West Memphis. The final resting place of WWI sharpshooter Herman Davis, the park features an impressive memorial and gravesite.

Lake Frierson State Park

Established in 1975, Lake Frierson State Park covers 114 acres in northeastern Arkansas – just over an hour northwest of West Memphis. This Arkansas state park contains a 335-acre reservoir, and features fishing, hiking, and kayaking.

Park visitors may fish for bream, catfish, crappie, and bass at Lake Frierson, hike the Dogwood Lane Trail, and stop by the visitor center. Other amenities include picnic spots, playgrounds, and a climate-controlled pavilion.

Lake Poinsett State Park

Hosting 93,000 annual visitors, Lake Poinsett State Park covers 132 acres in northeastern Arkansas – less than an hour northwest of West Memphis. Arkansas’ 20th state park, Lake Poinsett State Park was founded in 1963.

Recreation at Lake Poinsett State Park includes hiking trails, nature viewing, kayaking, and fishing for bass, bream, catfish, and crappie. Visitors may trek down the one-mile Great Blue Heron Trail, or try a kayak or canoe tour.

Parkin Archeological State Park

Also dubbed the Parkin Indian Mound, the Parkin Archeological State Park is located in eastern Arkansas along the Mississippi River Delta – less than 30 miles west of West Memphis. This Arkansas state park is both a U.S. National Historic Landmark and listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

An archeological site, the park was formerly a 17-acre Mississippi Period village – and now features interpretive exhibits and auditorium. Other amenities include a gift shop, picnic spots, playgrounds, and onsite pavilion.
