Fort Smith National Historic Site
Established in 1961, Fort Smith National Historic Site is located in northern Arkansas in the city of Fort Smith. Set on the banks of the Arkansas River, this National Historic Landmark – and main stop along the famed Trail of Tears – preserves historic military forts from the 1800s.
Visitors may trek down the Arkansas River walking path featuring exhibits on the Trail of Tears, visit the Gallows, or sign up the many ranger led programs.
